What personal data we collect, and why
Comments
When you leave a comment, we collect the data shown in the comment form (name, email address and comment content), plus your IP address and browser user agent string, to help detect spam. An anonymised string created from your email address (a hash) may be sent to the Gravatar service to check whether you’re using it; Gravatar’s privacy policy is available at https://automattic.com/privacy/. After your comment is approved, your profile picture may be publicly visible alongside your comment.
We use Akismet to filter spam comments. As part of this, your comment content and some technical information (such as your IP address) may be sent to Automattic, Akismet’s provider, for analysis. See Automattic’s privacy policy at https://automattic.com/privacy/.
Getting in touch
If you email us, including via the link on the Contact page, we receive whatever information you choose to include, so we can reply to you. We don’t add your address to any mailing list unless you separately choose to sign up for one.
Newsletter sign-up
Where a “subscribe by email” box appears on the site, it’s provided by Substack. If you enter your email there, it’s submitted directly to Substack, not stored by us, and governed by Substack’s own privacy policy and terms.
Purchases
If you buy a digital product (an ebook / “Herb-Book”) through the Shop, we use WooCommerce to process your order, which collects your name, email address and billing details needed to process and deliver your purchase. Payment itself is handled by our payment providers, PayPal and WooPayments; we don’t see or store your full card details, as these are handled directly by those providers under their own privacy policies.
Cookies and analytics
Like most websites, we use cookies for basic site functions, and:
- Google Analytics, to understand how visitors use the site (pages visited, time on site, general location and device type). This data is aggregated and doesn’t identify you personally.
- Google AdSense, to show advertising on the site. Google and its advertising partners may use cookies to serve ads based on your visits to this and other sites. You can review Google’s approach to advertising, and opt out of personalised advertising, at https://adssettings.google.com.
- Embedded YouTube videos, which may set cookies when you play them, under YouTube/Google’s own privacy policy.
You can control or delete cookies at any time through your browser settings; blocking cookies may affect how parts of the site work.
Affiliate links
Some links on this site are affiliate links, including links to Amazon as part of the Amazon Associates Programme; see our Affiliate Disclosure for the full explanation. If you click through and make a purchase, the retailer (e.g. Amazon) sets its own cookies and handles your data under its own privacy policy. We don’t receive your personal or payment details from these purchases, only anonymised information about the referral itself.
Who we share data with
We don’t sell your personal data. We share it only with the service providers needed to run the site and carry out the activities above: Automattic (Akismet, Gravatar), Google (Analytics, AdSense, YouTube), PayPal and WooPayments (payment processing), and Substack (email sign-up, where used).
How long we keep your data
Comments and their metadata are kept indefinitely, so we can recognise and approve follow-up comments automatically rather than holding every comment in a moderation queue. Order information for digital products is kept for as long as needed for accounting, tax and legal purposes.
Your rights
If you’re in the EU or UK, you have rights under GDPR over your personal data, including the right to request a copy of the data we hold about you, correct it, or ask us to delete it, subject to any legal obligation we have to keep certain records (for example, order and invoice history). Children’s privacy
This site is not directed at children, and we don’t knowingly collect personal data from children.
Where your data is sent
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam-detection service located outside your country of residence, and some of the third-party services listed above (Google, Automattic, PayPal, Substack) may process data outside your country. Those providers are responsible for ensuring an adequate level of protection for any data transferred under applicable law.

We may update this policy from time to time. The “last updated” date at the top of this page always reflects the most recent version.
